Puppy Agility

Our Puppy Agility Class is designed to build the proper foundation for your puppy to interact with agility equipment. Because puppies’ growth plates are not fully developed, we have created this program to help them safely experience the A-frame, floor level jumps, tunnels, floor level donuts, and targeting.

We want to build your puppy’s experience with agility in a positive and fun learning environment, so when your puppy is ready for Beginner Agility they will move to the head of the class!

Age Requirements: This class is designed for dogs between the ages of 6-months and 9-months old.

Policy on Missing Agility classes:

While we understand that things do happen and students may need to miss a class or two during a given session, we do not offer make-up classes for agility. Due to the setup involved and the fluidity of agility training—students are always progressing in their skills no matter their level of experience—it is not possible to offer a class that would make up for what could have been learned during any single missed class. However, we do offer private sessions at the rate of $75 for a 30 minute session and $135 for a 60 minute session.

Beginner Agility

This six-week class is for students who are new to agility. Your dog must be at least 9 month of age, in good health and have had previous basic training (sit, down, come, stay commands). Your dog must be comfortable working around other dogs and people and also eager to work for delicious food, treats or toys.

In Beginner Agility, dogs will learn basic skills that build the foundation for safe and successful agility runs, including:

-Focus on the owner.

-Introduction to jumping.

-Introduction to agility obstacles.

Because the bond between you and your dog is the most important factor in a successful agility team, our Beginner Agility Class not only teaches you how to best communicate with your dog but through one-on-one instruction and fun exercises we can help you create a powerful foundation for a successful relationship with your dog both in and out of the agility ring.

Agility workshops

Our agility workshops are a great opportunity for current agility students to hyper focus on specific aspects of agility training to take them and their pooch to the next level.

Please see below for info on the next upcoming agility workshop.

Contacts: In Agility, the contact obstacles include the Dog Walk, A-Frame, and Teeter. They can be a great source of frustration for dogs and handlers due to the complex skills, confidence and impulse control it takes to successfully navigate them. In this class, we will pay special attention to building confidence and speed on the Teeter, creating a reliable and FAST stopped contact, and/or, introducing and working through the journey that is doing a running A-Frame or Dog Walk! This class is designed to operate like a group private session and will be largely custom to what you are working on or through!

Distance: This class will focus on teaching your dog to work away from you to take obstacles at a distance and the handling to support it.

Independent Obstacles: A companion workshop to the distance workshop. The goal of this workshop is to teach that once you've cued an obstacle that your dog completes it regardless of your position. Sending ahead and pushing out to the side will be covered in the distance workshop but hanging back, standing still, or pealing away from obstacles will be covered in the independent class. As an example- cueing weaves as handler stand perfectly still. Or sending the dog up the Frame as the handler hangs back

Jumping: Jumps are the most important agility obstacle as they make up the majority of agility courses. Just one jump bar down can cost you a qualifying run. There are also multiple different ways our dog should be able to take a jump- from the front, from the back, and from all different angles and approaches. Do you feel like you have to take your dog to each jump? Building distance and independence on your jumps will make your entire agility experience easier, AND increase you and your dog’s speed. In this class, we will focus on building independence on our jumps and backsides, introduce international jump handling skills like threadles, and perform striding drills to increase our dog’s efficiency, speed and ability to keep bars up.

Skills & Drills: Love Agility, but can’t catch your breath at the end of your run? Have you ever felt like you are having to take your dog to every obstacle while others can send from further away? Do you want to increase your handling skills while elevating your dog’s performance in Agility? Enter Agility Skills & Drills! This is a class for students currently enrolled in agility classes at Urban Pooch. Instead of working through coursework like our typical agility classes, we will work through foundation skills and drills designed to increase our dog’s distance and independence on a variety of obstacles. We will also be introducing international handling skills that can be added to enhance your coursework performance. Some topics covered include: threadles, backsides, distance on jumps, obstacle discrimination, tunnels on a verbal only, passbys, marker systems clarity, motivation, speed building, and more!

Strategy & Games: There are many different courses you are faced with when you start competing- Standard, Jumpers, Gamblers, Time to Beat, Steeplechase, Speedstakes, snooker, wildcard, the list is endless. Each course has a different set of rules. Some runs, even allow you to create your own course! There are a handful of strategy games that test your handling skills- your ability to keep your dog close and pass obstacles without taking them, your ability to problem solve and think on the fly, your ability to use your distance skills and send your dog out away from you. In this class, we will play a different strategy game each week, talking about different ways to handle it and how to brainstorm when you are faced with these games in a trial environment.

Weave Workshop: Agility is fun, fast paced, and really appeals to our dogs instincts to run and jump over and through things! However, there is one obstacle that is not an instinctual movement for our dogs- -the weave poles. The weave poles are often the obstacle we see dogs struggle the most to learn and maintain. Our “Weave Workshop” class is designed to teach our dogs to LOVE the weave poles. We will focus on independence, both on entries and exits, and building distance so that our dog understands: “I drive through the very last pole EVERY time, no matter where my human is.”

Reserving a Spot for Agility 2, 3, Advanced and Masters Classes

Please note this section applies only to the following classes: Agility 2; Agility 3; Advanced Agility; and Master Agility. THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO PUPPY AGILITY & BEGINNER AGILITY CLASSES, WHICH WORK ON A FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE BASIS AND DOES NOT ENSURE ANY RESERVED SPOT FOR FUTURE CLASS SESSIONS.

Due to the fact that students in these aforementioned classes often repeat the same class many times in a row before being able to move to a higher-level, we have a booking/scheduling policy that differs from our other class offerings. Students currently enrolled in an active class session will by default have their spot reserved for them in the next round of the same class/time/day until the 5th week of the current session. At that point students must inform UPTFC if they are continuing on in the following session or not. If they are, then payment in full is due to secure their spot.* If a student is not continuing, then we will begin the process of filling their spot for the subsequent round with another student. Please note that if a training student is taking a break from a specific class/time/day after repeating for several sessions, we cannot guarantee them a spot in a future class as most all of these classes reach the maximum amount of students and the student who takes their spot will then be afforded the same reservation system of having a spot reserved for them in subsequent sessions by default.

So, for example, let’s say you are a current student in the Wednesday 8:30pm Masters Agility class with the following class dates: 4/17, 4/24, 5/1, 5/8, 5/15 & 5/22. When you arrive for week 5 of class (5/15), your instructor will take attendance and then ask you if you are continuing or not. They will then communicate that information to our Training Ambassador so we can begin to make the official roster for the next session. If you are continuing, payment is due that same day to officially lock in your spot in the following session.* If you are not continuing, then we will remove your default reservation for the subsequent rounds and, if there are students on the waitlist for that particular class/time/day, then we will begin contacting them to fill the now vacant spot. If you are not in attendance for week 5 of class, our training ambassador will reach out to you directly by phone as soon as possible. However, if no reply is given by the time week 6 of class (5/22) commences, then your spot in the subsequent round would be forfeited and we would begin the process of contacting potential students on the waitlist for class to fill the now open spot.

Please remember you can pay for any service either in person at our front desk or over the phone. If our front desk is closed at the time you normally attend class, you can always call the next day to give payment with a credit card over the phone.

*If for some reason a student is unable to pay that day we will grant them a 1-week grace period in which we will continue to hold their spot. However, if no payment is received by the time of week 6 of the current round of class, then the student will forfeit their spot in the next round. If there are potential students listed on the waitlist, then we will begin contacting them to fill the spot in the upcoming class session.
